Our Top 5 Gentleman Style Icons Over 50

A few weeks back we covered 5 of our favourite style icons under 30 who represented the best in young gentleman’s fashion and demonstrated how age is no barrier to looking your best. However to show we aren’t biased towards youth so we decided to put together a list of 5 stylish gentlemen over the age of 50, with the aim of proving that a gentleman, much like a good wine, can just as easily get better with age.

5) Pierce Brosnan

The ex-007 actor and Mamma Mia star turned 61 this year and appears to be showing no signs of changing his charismatic and debonair style soon. Whether he’s wearing beautifully tailored suits or simply dressed in a casual shirt and chinos, he is always an example of sharply dressed style. For any maturer gentlemen looking to develop a style that’s clean-cut and suave, Brosnan is a style icon worth watching.

4)  George Clooney

It would be foolish to create a list of older fashion icons and not include George Clooney, who has become almost synonymous with the term “silver fox”.  At the age of 53 he is still one of the most desirable men on the planet after being named “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1997 by People’s Magazine, regularly appearing in magazines as one of the most handsome actors in Hollywood. Any man who fears a mid-life crisis should look to Clooney as an icon of stylish dressing for a gentleman over 50.

3) Giancarlo Giannini

Yet another James Bond entry though instead of Bond, Giannini played René Mathis in both “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace” in 2 of the Daniel Craig 007 trilogy. At the age of 72, and with a career spanning nearly 50 years, Giancarlo Giannini is proof of Italian styling not being limited by age. He has recently starred in Johnnie Walker’s “Gentleman’s Wager” for their Blue Label advertisement. Giannini is the epitome of ageing stylishly and timelessly for any man who worries that his age prevents him from dressing well.

2) Johnny Depp

The Pirates of the Caribbean and Willy Wonka actor has always been renowned as an icon of alternative gentleman’s style since he hit the red carpet. At the age of 51 he has been nominated as “Sexiest Man Alive” twice in both 2008 and 2009 by People’s magazine, with his roles of Capt. Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands cemented in movie culture history. Depp proves that dressing your age doesn’t necessarily mean dressing “boringly”, you can add flair and style to suit your personality.

1) Tom Ford

We at The Male Stylist see Tom Ford as one of our all-time favourite gentleman icons in modern society, both his designs and his fashion-sense are as sharp as they are timeless. His career has taken him to Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, where he was Creative Director for over a decade, as well as allowing him to direct his own films since 2005. At 51 he is one of the definitive style icons for gentlemen everywhere and the embodiment of mature men’s fashion.
