What A Gent’s Wearing: AW15 Styling with Topman

A little while back I was asked by Topman to come into their beautiful Oxford Street store and style some of their AW15 collection as part of their new “This Is Denim” campaign to promote their latest collections. It was  a good opportunity for me to try and create a new style from a brand that I don’t regularly shop with and, as their tagline says, it was the chance to “do something different”. Following on from the success of my last outfit post, I wanted to create another “Summer to Autumn/Winter” transitional look that can be worn and built on as the colder months begin to roll in.

The idea behind this look was to utilize a variety of lightweight elements and combine them to create an outfit that had rustic, winter elements without being overly chunky or heavy. The three main clothing items were the blue denim jacket, part of the new demin range from Topman, the burgundy jumper and the brown suede ankle boots. I then added in a pair of grey, slim-fit jeans to bring out the red and the blue of the jacket and jumper, whilst complimenting the dark brown of the boots. As an overall shape, the slim fit of the style meant that it didn’t look overly baggy or chunky when worn but still retained warmth when the temperature was cooler in the evening.

The inspiration for this outfit came from a variety of styles and celebrities, such as Zac Efron and Ryan Reynolds who have worn similar looks in the past. This combination of rustic styles with metropolitan/contemporary elements has made an ensemble that is suitable for a variety of situations.

I have to say that I’ve always been slightly cautious about creating styles like this as they are not necessarily within my fashion “comfort zone”. However, I’m really happy with the results and incredibly thankful to Topman for offering me the opportunity to style it as well as Topman’s personal shopping service for advising on design and fit where necessary. The quality and design of their denim items really made this piece a joy to put together and helped create a mature and contemporary, masculine denim look instead of a vintage/retro one.

This whole experience has reinvigorated my passion for styles like this and i’ll be aiming to create more in the coming weeks and months. It’s also given me some insight into the versatility of denim as a material and how it can be used to create masculine, warm looks that fit perfectly with this season’s trends.
