The Man About Time has been away on holiday recently taking a well deserved break. However, today he returns and discusses some of his favourite watches from the real-life style icons of his generation.
Chronographs; that is watches which have a stopwatch function are always in style and in the world of mechanical watches there are a large number of manufacturers offering a variety of functions. Prices begin at around £900 for Christopher Ward’s award winning C700 Grande Rapide and can head as far north as your wallet will permit. Actually a lot of the medium price self-winding chronographs use the same movement (with or without modifications) so you decide on the look that you like and go for it. But this column is really all about style; so let us be a little controversial and argue that actually there are really only three chronographs that cut it for us here at The Male Stylist. Two are routed in motorsport and one is the only watch that has ever been to the moon! View Post
Film and television have brought many stylish protagonists to our screens, giving us good guys with great fashion giving us yet another reason to support them. From the classically suave Bonds to the flamboyant Dickie Greenleaf, the extravagance of Jay Gatsby to the rebellious Jim Stark each one has been heroically stylish. However, every now and then the villain’s dark intentions are expressed in their dark fashion-sense, giving us some of the best dressed bad guys on our screens. Today, we run through 4 of our favourites and what makes them so stylishly sinister.
Thomas Shelby – Peaky Blinders
Thomas Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, is the leader of the Peaky Blinders, the well renowned Birmingham mafia of the 1920s. This real-life gang terrorised and controlled the city with ruthless violence and extensive money laundering; which the gruesome BBC TV series re-imagines brilliantly. Thomas’s love of long coats, thick wool tailoring and flat caps, complete with razors in the bill, makes his looks both iconic and sharp (no pun intended). Although not necessarily completely in keeping with today’s trends, there’s certainly a great deal of inspiration in Tommy’s wardrobe. View Post

So far, our style icons have come from relatively modern backgrounds but today we’ll be covering the men who added style to the silver screen and carved their names in history as icons of men’s fashion.

In the past the majority of our style icons have not often originated from the UK, many are from America and a few others from Canada and Australia. With the exception of those British stars we have already mentioned in our style icon lists, we’ve put together a list of our favourite style icons from across Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the UK. An article to prove that our homegrown talent is just as stylish as any other nation’s.
5) Benedict Cumberbatch
The star of hit BBC drama Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Fifth Estate and the soon-to-be released Imitation Game, Cumberbatch has always been a class-act to watch on the big or small screen. His style commonly reflects his character, a sophisticated blend of charismatic wit and sharp intellect that is shown in his slim-fit tailoring and clean-cut style. Currently ranked by Empire Magazine as “The Sexiest Movie Star” in Hollywood he is a great style idol for the tall, slim gentleman who enjoys a darker touch to his outfits. View Post
